Chess and Checkers Pavilion (Sundial Pavilion)

Chess and Checkers Pavilion (Sundial Pavilion)

Name: Chess and Checkers Pavilion (Sundial Pavilion)
Standing? Yes Year: 1863

Now known as the Sundial Pavilion for the the cast-iron sundial which once sat near it, this pavilion was located on the west side of the lake. The pavilion has a European flourish in a park heavily influenced by Moorish and Oriental landscaping and art. Built in 1863, this structure was—as one might guess—a quiet shelter for playing games of chess or checkers on lazy summer afternoons.

The sundial itself was moved to the Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory gardens in 1983.
