The Passionist priests and brothers dedicated St. Joseph's Monastery in Irvington on Baltimore's West Side in 1868; however, in 1883, the monastery burned to the ground. During the same year, St. Joseph's Church was dedicated, with a new monastery built in 1886. In 1892 Mrs. Celinda Whiteford of Baltimore donated money to build Whiteford Hall, the Catholic parochial school affiliated with St. Joseph's Monastery. Dedicated on her birthday, February 22, 1893, Whiteford can still be seen etched in stone on the south entrance to the school even though it has gone through several identities: St. Joseph's Monastery School, Madonna School, and now St. Bernardine's School. |
